Dental Veneers and Orthodontics (303) 694-9740
Dental Veneers ... Orthodontics... and Cosmetic Dentistry
Questions have arisen on which is better dental veneers or orthodontics? The questions has no simple answer and it varies from patient to patient. If the teeth are shaped very well and the color is great then orthodontics is most indicated. However... if the teeth are misshaped and the color is off... then dental veneers my be the preferred treatment. Straight ugly teeth are just that... straight ugly teeth. Lone Tree Dentists Dr. James DeLapp and Dr. H. Candace DeLapp provide general and cosmetic dental services to patients in the Lone Tree area of Colorado.
Combining Orthodontics and Dental Veneers
There are certain times where a combination of both orthodontics and Dental veneers are in order. Cosmetic dentistry involves at times the use of several different modalities to treat each case. These tend to be complex cases that can take time but the outcome is worth it. In most instances the teeth are moved into their "ideal" position and then dental veneers are fabricated. As an example teeth stained by tetracycline can be very gray or brown in color. Teeth whitening or bleaching may or may not help. Dental veneers may be the best alternative.

Tongue bacteria Lone Tee dentist
Tongue Bacteria
Tongue bacteria can complicate oral health is so many different ways. Our Lone Tree Dentist feels the tongue is like a sponge that allows millions of bacteria to hide in. Like a sponge your tongue needs to be cleaned daily in order to reduce the number of bacteria in your mouth.
Your mouth is not sterile
Your mouth is not meant to be devoid of bacteria. Like Goldilocks and the three bears you don't want too much or too little... just the right amount of bacteria. If your mouth is devoid of sufficient bacteria yeast infections (thrush) can occur. Oral mouth infections "may" be caused by the long term use of antibiotics that rid the mouth of sufficient quantities of bacterial.
Too much bacteria
The same can be said for too much bacteria in the mouth. Abnormally high levels of bacteria in your mouth can contribute to dental cavities as well as periodontal disease. In addition, there is growing evidence that overall health of individuals can be improved by good oral hygiene. Stroke and heart problems "may" be linked to high levels of bacterial in your mouth.
Mechanical and Chemical removal of bacteria
Mechanical removal of bacterial is the basis of home care. This would include brushing and flossing. In addition to brushing your tongue ...you may wish to employ a tongue scraper to remove plaque and bacteria from your tongue. A tongue scraper typically is a bendable plastic "comb" like appliance that can remove bacteria effectively.
Chemical removal can occur in many different forms and include some prescription and over the counter medications. These include but are not limited to:
- Listerine
- Cloysis
- Peridex
- Fluoride rinses
- Any mouthwash
- frequent rinsing with water
- Solutions of bicarbonate (baking soda)
- others...

Dental implants Lone Tree dentist
Dental implants
Lone Tree dentist Dr. James DeLapp and Dr. H. Candace DeLapp provide dental implant services for a variety of dental situations. Dental implants can be used for a variety of situations including but not limited to:- Replacing a single tooth
- Replacing several teeth
- To act a a bridge and span an area in which several teeth are missing
- Dental implants can replace "all" (or nearly all) your teeth in patients who have dentures
- Dental implants can act as anchor for a lower denture. It "helps" retention especially for lower dentures
Single tooth replacement is a common dental procedure that our Lone Tree dentist offer. This is especially valuable if teeth on either side of the space have no dental filling or dental crowns. A fixed dental bridge require our Lone Tree dentist to crown teeth on either side of the space. If the teeth on either side of the space have large dental filling a dental bridge may be your best choice. If the teeth are "virgin" on either side of the teeth a dental implant may be a better choice.

Teeth Whitening Lone Tree Colorado (303) 694-9740
A laser is "not" used to whiten teeth Lone Tree Colorado Dentist
There has been some sloppy terminology in regards to whitening. Some have incorrectly termed this light activated whitening as Laser Whitening. The first things to review on Laser tooth whitening is the light is NOT a laser.
Luma whitening and other systems use bright lights not lasers
This light has a specific... very bright wave lengths but technically is not a laser. Make no mistake about it the light like a laser emits wavelengths of light that can damage your eyes. Please use protective eye wear when near either. Lone Tree Colorado Dentists Dr. James DeLapp and Dr. H. Candace DeLapp provide cosmetic dental services for their patients in Denver, Castle Pines Highlands Ranch, Centennial, Parker, Greenwood Village, and Centennial Colorado.

Staining begins early in life
Most of us begin life with white teeth and over time foods in your diet or...drink or... smoking stain and discolor your teeth. In time your teeth can appear yellow...gray... or brown in color.
There are many techniques to bleach or whiten your teeth
There are several techniques used to whiten or bleach teeth. In reality... most are effective to varying degrees. The bottom line to bleaching is ...the time the bleach is on the tooth and how concentrated the solution is. The more concentrated the solution... the less time needed to be on the tooth. Low concentrations found in over- the- counter products need much more time. In our Lone Tree Colorado dentist opinion.. bleaching or whitening toothpastes are for the most part ineffective. The techniques use include but are not limited to:
- One hour -two hour bleaching technique (Luma etc.)
- Custom dental tray fabricated in our Lone Tree Dental office
- Universal fit dental trays
- Whitening strips over -the -counter
Combining tooth whitening technique for difficult to whiten teeth
Our Lone Tree dentist has found in difficult to whiten or bleach teeth that several techniques may need to be combined to whiten your teeth. Colors with gray hues or tetracycline staining can be very difficult/impossible to whiten to any great degree. Dental veneers may be the only effective solution
Our Highlands Ranch dentist have helped hundreds of patients achieve a white smile everyone desires. Power whitening with Luma (with the bright light) is a quick affordable and reliable technique.

Lone Tree Dentist and Denver Dentist (303) 694-9740
Our Lone Tree Dentist has recently subscribed to Twitter. Twitter is a micro- blog that limits writing to approximately 160 characters or about two sentences. Our team members thought this was great to limit the amount of information that we can write (accused of being boring... dentists from time to time). There are time where we get excited about a topic and writing get long. We hope our patients or those who follow our blog take it for what it is intended to be... up-to-date topics on dentistry.
With what our Lone Tree dentists have written we wish to become a resource of information on a variety of dental topics. That in part is why we developed a dental information library on a companion web site. Their office has tried to write articles about questions their dental patients actually ask them (what is Invisalign e.g.). They hope this helps you as a resource. If you would like to access this library please click the following link Highlands Ranch dentist and Denver Dentistry. Their dental care library is written by the Dr.'s DeLapp and has taken several years to write. Dentists can purchase "canned" dental care libraries by they feel this approach is more customized. (Google... "dental care library" and you can see the canned information). Some sites information is written by ghost writers. Our Highlands Ranch dentist articles are the real thing (filled with hopefully a "few" typo's).
They would like to thank our patients who have supported them over the years and hope they (we) hope (we) can continue our relationship as your dentist.

Dental Veneers Parker Colorado Dentist call today at (303) 694-9740
Dental veneers to improve your smile is one of several options available for patients who desire more than what teeth whitening can provide. Dr. James DeLapp and Dr. H. Candace DeLapp are Parker Colorado dentist who are happy to discuss with you the many options available including dental veneers. Their office serves the Highlands Ranch, Lone Tree, Castle Pines, Greenwood Village, Centennial, Douglas County, Ken Caryl, Parker and the Greater Denver area.
Dental veneers are one of many options for the patient who wants to change the appearance of their smile. Dental veneers may “correct” uneven, crowded or discolored teeth or all porcelain crowns used in conjunction with dental veneers can replace missing teeth and fill in gaps in your smile.
Why do patient choose to do dental porcelain veneers.
There are many reasons why patients choose to have porcelain veneers placed that to list all the reasons would be an unmanageable number. Truly, everyone is different but as you are aware, the smile is the gateway to the soul. If your teeth are crooked, crowded stained, or chipped you are less likely to smile and others perception of you can be affected. Some of the reasons we have seen include:
- I dislike the color of my teeth.
My teeth are getting shorter as I age
My teeth make me look older than I feel
My teeth are stained from antibiotics (tetracycline) or minerals in the water.
I have contact with the public and my teeth give a poor impression of me.
Dental Veneers
Dental veneers are thin tooth-colored strips of porcelain or similar ceramic material that are bonded onto the existing teeth. The purpose of dental veneers is to enhance the shape and color of your smile.
The advantages of ceramic dental veneers or tooth bonding are numerous and include:
- The color of the materials is very similar to the color of the teeth, which can create a more esthetic appearance than did traditional bonding.
- Porcelain veneers maintain their white color because they tend to resist staining.
- Technology improves almost daily and the strength of veneers is increasing making them more durable and life-like.
- Rapid smile improvement is possible only with dental veneers.
If you would like information on other dental topics please feel free to visit our companion web site by clicking on the following link Parker Colorado Dentist.
Occasionally, we use several techniques to design your smile. This may include orthodontic (traditional braces or Invisalign). Very complex esthetics may be addressed in this manner and are rarely solved by only one technique for your best results. Parker Colorado dentists Dr. James DeLapp and Dr. H. Candace DeLapp provide dental veneers for their patients in Ken Caryl, Denver, Castle Pines, Greennwood Village, Douglas County, Lone Tree and Parker .

Parker Colorado Dentist Cosmetic dentistry
Parker Colorado dentists Dr. James DeLapp and Dr. H. Candace DeLapp use a "diagnostic wax- up" as an aid in evaluating your smile and to determine if you are a candidate for cosmetic dentistry Our Lone Tree and Parker Colorado dentist use your models and wax up potiential styles of teeth to see if what we wish to do is possible. This diagnostic wax-up while not a perfect indicator of outcome... gives us a "more" predictable "idea" than simple dental imaging can. What your Parker Colorado dentists have found is the soft tissue contours (gums etc.) are some of the more difficult areas address in smile design and are managed as best as we can.
First step: Determine what "style" of teeth you would like-
One of the first steps our Parker Colorado Dentist discuss with you is the "style" of teeth you wish to have fabricated. Some of the many choices include:
- Teeth that are rounded at the incisal edges
- Teeth that are flat across
- Teeth that are more square shaped
- Teeth that are more "oval" shaped
- ... and many more choices
Smile gallery choices Parker Colorado Dentist
Teeth have different shapes and edges that give very distinctly different appearances. Some styles are flat... others slightly rounded... and others oval. There are many to choose from. We make a "style" selection (e.g. "youthful" "mature"... "Hollywood") and the dental laboratory will wax your style over your existing teeth to see if this is the change you desire. It gives us a preview or what is and what is not possible.
Dr. James DeLapp and Dr. Candace DeLapp's dental laboratory fabricates a diagnostic wax-up from your model for your review and approval. Using the style you have chosen the dental laboratory fabricates the shape and style of your new dental veneers. You and the doctors can review the changes and determine if you want to proceed with treatment. If you decide to proceed, we use this wax- up to fabricate your temporaries that you wear while the dental veneers are being fabricated. In a sense you get to have a trial run on the dental veneers! After you have worn the temporaries for a week or so and have approved the style... your veneers are finished to this form so there are no major surprises.
Complimentary Cosmetic Dentistry Consultation
You should feel free to call and schedule a complimentary cosmetic dental consultation. A complimentary cosmetic dental consultation provides the following:
- It provides a no-cost visit to see if you are a "candidate" for dental veneers or any other cosmetic dental procedure (dental veneers, tooth whitening, and/or Invisalign orthodontics).
- It allows you to have your questions answered ahead of time and to decide if our Highlands Ranch and Parker Colorado office is the right fit for you.
- It gives the Dr's James and Candace DeLapp the opportunity to evaluate the level of complexity of your esthetic dental case.
- A few esthetic veneer dental makeovers are complex and the Dr.'s Candace and James DeLapp can at least give you at least an "idea" of how complex your case will be and their recommendations for your best result.
Is our Highlands Ranch and Parker Colorado Dental Office convenient to you? Most of our dental patients come from the Lone Tree, Greenwood Village, Ken Caryl , Castle Pine, Centennial area as well as the Englewood, and Arapahoe County area of the South Denver Metro Area.
Phelan and Heindl in a 2006 AACD article have one of the best articles ever written on the Diagnostic wax up and its use. Dental students should use this reference on this subject.
If you decide to proceed with dental treatment, of course, we would need to have you make a dental appointment for dental records so we can plan and proceed with treatment. Please feel free to contact our Parker Colorado dental office at (303) 694-9740

Teeth sensitivity
Tooth Sensitivity
Our Lone Tree Colorado dentists have "many patients with some degree of tooth sensitivity some time in their life. This tooth sensitivity ranges from mild... moderate and in very rare cases... severe. How it is treated obviously depends up the severity of the symptoms including but not limited to no treatment to dental filling to possible gum therapy. Our Lone Tree Dentist also serve dental patients in the Denver, Castle Pines, Parker, Ken Caryl, Highlands Ranch, Greenwood Village and Centennial Colorado area.
What causes tooth sensitivity?
There are many different dental and non-dental diseases/issues that cause tooth sensitivity. In this article we will be discussing dentin sensitivity. However is should be noted that severely decayed teeth etc. should have immediate attention by your dentist. We would rather have you evaluated by a dentist sooner than later.
Types of Professionally applied dentin desensitizers
In a very general sense dentin desensitizers are broken down into products that either lower nerve sensitivity or cause tubule occlusion with our without protein precipitation. What this means in a non-scientific terminology is these products block the stimulus from reaching the nerve of the tooth.
Potassium Oxylate
Potassium oxylate is considered to work by blocking the tubules in the dentin of the tooth making the tooth less sensitive. Sensodyne sealant is one of a handful of products that accomplishes this task
Potassioun Nitrate
Potasium Nitrate is the second densitizers whose mechanism of action is lowering nerve sensitivity. Regular Sensodyne is a good example of the many different products available.

Case Evaluation: C0smetic dentistry
The following case is one of the many cosmetic cases our Lone Tree dentists have addressed over the years. We use actual cases and not stock photographic files.
In the cosmetic dentistry case highlighted in this article there were many ways to address this situation and include but are not limited to:
- Do nothing i.e. leave as is
- Orthodontically move the teeth especially the central incisors over and replace the two front porcelain and metal crowns with all porcelain dental crowns
- Use Invisalign to move the teeth and restore as mentioned above
- Replace the front porcelain and metal crowns with all- porcelain dental crowns. This solution would solve the dark metal outline but the width of the two front teeth would be excessive.
- Take the space between the two front teeth and add with to the "lateral incisors" making the front teeth... the central incisors appear to be narrower in width.
- Utilize more that four (4) teeth to balance the spaces out (this was our choice)

Teeth Cleaning and Polishing Lone Tree Colorado Dentist
Teeth Cleaning and Polishing
What is involved when we "clean" your teeth and polish them may be more complex than most patients understand. In our Lone Tree Dental office our hygienists and doctors scale off calculus and curette the gingival tissue to assist in healing. This involves using the dental scalers in a cuff of gum tissue that surrounds each of your teeth. It is also described and scaling "under" you gums. Our Lone Tree Colorado dentists also serve patients in Highlands Ranch, Castle Pines, Centennial,Greenwood Village, Parker, Douglas County, Ken Caryl and the greater Denver area.
Plaque and Calculus
Plaque and calculus develop on your teeth quite rapidly. Some of our Lone Tree dental patients develop this faster than other. Home care... diet... and host bacteria determine how rapidly these deposits form. In most instances only a dentist or hygienist are able to remove these deposits with hand instruments or with the aid of an ultrasonic scaler.
Ultrasonic scaler
The ultrasonic scaler (cavitron) uses ultrasonic vibration to remove the tar-tar adhering to your teeth. In addition, our Lone Tree Colorado dentists are able to add antimicrobial solutions to this ultrasonic scaler to irrigate the gum tissue. Irrigation of the gum tissue with an antimicrobial increases healing of the gum tissue.

Baby tooth decay Lone Tree Dentist (303)694-9740
Baby tooth decay
Our Lone Tree Dentists received from Delta Dental information on their initiative for the Delta Dental of Colorado Foundation that I would like you to know. This program is in its third year and has increased awareness of expectant mothers from 26% to 69% on how dental issue can affect their baby.
Can you give you baby tooth decay?
Unfortunately yes. If you have cavity causing bacteria in your mouth mother and fathers can easily pass those to you baby. Sharing spoons or pacifier are some of the modes of transmission.
You should see your dentist regularly and maintain great home care for your children
Lone Tree dentist recommends the following:
- Wipe you baby's gums with a washcloth several time a day
- When teeth begins to show use a child's tooth brush to remove plaque
- Check to see if you see staining on the surfaces of the teeth. These areas"could" be cavities or starting cavities.
- Do not give your baby sugar water or juice at night to fall asleep with. Baby bottle decay can be devastating.
- Consider having your child's first dental visit at one year old
- You need to take care of your mouth also so schedule and exam regularly

Lone Tree Dentist Smile Design for Porcelain Veneers
Our Lone Tree dentists, Dr. James DeLapp and Dr. H. Candace DeLapp provide general and cosmetic dental services to their patients living in Highlands Ranch, Ken Caryl, Parker, Greenwood Village, Centennial and the Denver area. Getting you the smile you deserve in a process that takes much time and effort ahead of time to plan your smile.
Designing your smile for Porcelain Dental Veneers
The design of each smile in most cases depends on the combination of teeth shapes (in particular the incisal edges) of the front six(6) anterior teeth. There have been many authors that have given names of the styles of the teeth. The designs include but are not limited to:
- Teeth design where all the teeth are the same length
- Design where the central incisors are longer than the lateral incisors
- Canines can be made either prominent or subtle
- The teeth design many have the edges of the teeth are square.
- or... the edges can be rounded
- or... oval
- Many ... many other combinations
- In total there may be 1,000 different combinations of styles ( same authors even state more possibilities).
- Uniform color or a veneer (less life- like)
- Graded color from gum line to incisal edge
- Difference in texture on the surface of the veneer
- Opacity and translucency of the veneers.
The perfect smile style for you will be based on what you like. Our Lone Tree Dentists have a number of smile gallery's that give us an idea on what direction you wish to take you smile. From your input our office take impressions of your current teeth and our cosmetic dental laboratory fabricates your proposed smile in dental wax so you can see what your proposed smile looks like in three dimensions. Our Lone Tree dentists have found that dental imaging is best used to generate interest and not to establish outcomes.
Trial smiles for porcelain veneers Lone Tree Dentist
In certain cases (not all) we can test drive your smile from the diagnostic wax up. Cases where the teeth are significantly flaired or rotated do not work. We want you be certain you wish to proceed and our goal is to meet or exceed your expectations. The trial smile may be the way to see if this is for you.
Porcelain veneers
Porcelain veneers or porcelain crowns (or an mixture of both) can be used to solve complicated aesthetic issues.
